Findus Crispy Pancakes 1980 Mince Beef

THEY'VE been a much-loved supermarket staple for more than 60 years - but Findus Crispy Pancakes will soon disappear from shelves as they are replaced with a new name and recipe.

Now sold under the Birds Eye brand, the new-look Crispy Pancakes have different fillings and are 75p more expensive.

Generations of children grew up having Findus Crispy Pancakes after school, as they've been on sale since 1958.

They were particularly popular in the 1970s and 1980s, and were often served up alongside other retro classics such as Angel Delight and potato smileys.

They used to come in cheese, ham and cheese, and beef flavours - but these have now been scrapped and replaced with new flavours.

Birds Eye said it's using more "premium" ingredients for the new-style crispy pancakes, which now come in mozzarella, tomato and mozzarella, and ham and mozzarella flavours.

The beef flavour has been axed completely but Birds Eye said it is working on a replacement.

You still get four in a pack, but the new-look breadcrumb-coated stuffed pancakes are 20 per cent bigger and have up to 45 per cent more filling, according to Birds Eye.

The old style is still on sale at Asda for now at £1 for a 220g pack but Birds Eye said these will gradually be replaced with the new version, which will cost £1.75 for four in a 266g pack.

If you want to try them now, you can buy the new version from Sainsbury's.

And if you don't like the taste, Birds Eye will refund you the cost if you write in to tell them why, along with your original recipt.

The offer runs until May 31 so you have time to give your feedback. All the terms and conditions are online.

They will eventually go on sale at all major supermarkets.

Despite being made with more premium ingredients, the new-style crispy pancakes are actually more calorific than two of the old ones.

A portion used to be two old-style crispy pancakes, which contained 179 calories.

But now it's recommended you just eat one of the new pancakes at a time, with a mozzarella pancake containing 202 calories.

The new version also contains more fat, with up to 12g in one pancake compare to 2.8g in two of the old pancakes.

The new version does contain less sugar though, with 2.3g in one pancake compared to 7.2g in two of the old ones.

One of the only things that hasn't changed about the product is that it still needs to be baked from frozen in the oven.

But they now take less time to cook, down from 12-15 minutes to just 10 minutes now.

Both the old style pancakes and the new ones are also free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

Alessandro Solazzi, marketing manager at Birds Eye, said: "Findus Crispy Pancakes were an unforgettable part of childhood for many people living in the 70s, 80s and even early 90s. We want modern families to enjoy the same memorable mealtime moments.

"The new Birds Eye Crispy Pancakes still have the iconic crunch of the breadcrumb coating but thanks to new recipes and extra filling they are oozing with delicious flavour.

"We're so confident in the new taste that we are putting our money where our mouth is and allowing customers to claim their money back if they disagree."

Birds Eye and Findus are both owned by the Iglo Group, which is why the pancakes could change brands from Findus to Birds Eye.

A recent study of 2,000 British adults by cinema chain Vue found that Findus Crispy Pancakes are one of the top 20 most nostalgic foods that remind us of childhood.

But after the outcry, they remained on sale - until now.

The pancakes are being re-launched in time for Pancake Day tomorrow.
